Racial Profiling - is the reliance by law enforcement on race, ethnicity, national origin, in deciding whom to investigate, arrest, or detain. In other words, allowing race to influence the decisions that law enforcement officers make on the job.
-In New York City during 2011, 88 percent of all stops and frisks did not result in an arrest or a citation being given. Blacks and Latinos made up 84 percent of all those stopped, although they make up only 23 and 29 percent of NYC'S total population.
-Also, NYPD officers are more likely to use physical force against Blacks and Latinos during stops; in 2011, the NYPD used force against Blacks 76,483 times, and only 9,765 times against Whites.
-The policy of ' Stop and Frisk' is a policy that officers with a racial bias can easily abuse. Officers’ definitions of “reasonable suspicion” vary widely, so this law gives any officer the power to stop and frisk according to their own biases. Problems with this policy have been brought to the attention of New York City Police department and statistics can prove that the policy in fact does not do much to help. NYPD and Mayor Bloomberg claim that Stop and Frisk keeps weapons off the streets, but in fact, weapons were actually recovered in only 1% of all stops. This shows how institutional racism exists in the criminal justice system because the police department in New York is well aware of the problems that come with the policy of stop and frisk but at the same time, they practically ignore the accusations and allow it to continue.
-Below is a video of a teenager named Alvin who was stopped and frisked by two officers just because he "looked suspicious" due to his hood being on and because he looked at them. This video further shows how the stop and frisk policy allows for racial discrimination because the police officers proceed to call Alvin a "Mutt" which is a derogatory remark and then go on to tell him that they were going to break his arm just because they thought he was being a "wise ass" when he simply answered their questions. This video just goes to show how the policy put in place by certain police departments allows some individuals to exploit their power in order to prejudice and be able "justify" their actions.
